“Do Your Job”
"Doing someone else's job is dereliction of duty"
This quote landed with me the moment I heard it in our session on Saturday and has been front of mind ever since. Not only is it captivating for being equally simple and profound, but I also received it at a time when the message resonates with me so strongly. I recently received feedback from a senior leader on my team that essentially came out to "stop trying to take things off my plate." This feedback was shocking and difficult to hear, as I had spent the better part of the last year trying to alleviate this individual's workload by taking things off his plate. It had never occurred to me that despite good intentions, I wasn't asked to do such a thing, and as such, my actions were not received in the way I thought. I rated myself very high on the empathy scale when reflecting on the "Coach as Self" dimensions. After Saturday, I understand how this can be a drawback, as it may lead me to try to help someone when help isn't wanted or needed.
